Finding opportunity amid volatility
24 October 2023 | 01:30 PM - 03:40 PM | Taipei
Overview

Asia’s post-Covid recovery faces headwinds. Rising rates, declining growth, elevated inflation, and the lingering geopolitical challenges are among the issues slowing investment decisions. At the same time, sustainable financing continues to be an important consideration in Asia with borrowers shifting their approach from use of proceeds type structure to sustainability-linked financing to demonstrate their commitment to ESG.

The syndicated lending market reflects these challenges. It is not just the shift in the financing cost that will become par for the course. The reconfiguration of the supply chain means that beyond China, regions such as Southeast and South Asia are becoming more important, capturing the attention of both borrowers and lenders. A significant dearth of event-driven financings in Asia, however, has led to dismal lending activity in the first half of 2023. Amidst this landscape, India and Indonesia stand out, providing attractive opportunities for lenders and investors alike.

India, the world’s most populous country, is full steam ahead on its transition journey with projects across wind, solar and hydrogen as well as plans for greening the transport industry. Its financial services space is displaying a strong showing as it undergoes rapid expansion in investments and developments. M&A activities are also looking to come to life in India - making it an exciting country.

Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, remains an export hub in the region. The country’s export-driven sectors, coupled with a surge in infrastructure projects, are propelling demand in syndicated loans. Its state-owned enterprises play an important role in its national economy, with a strong showing in 2022-2023, leading the market with jumbo-sized deals.

The Asset, in association with DBS, is pleased to be hosting a roundtable discussion on the development of syndicated lending in two of DBS’ key markets, India and Indonesia. The event will examine sustainable financing in these markets and how potential borrowers are looking at lending solutions to support their new projects and refinancing needs.
